You will learn two different topics of digital citizenship on this page.
First you will learn all about digital communication. Then you will learn all about digital etiquette.
To communicate means to talk back and forth with someone or to tell someone something. Digital communication is using technology to tell someone something. You might be emailing, or posting something to a website. You might also be reading something someone else sent you or posted. Either way, it's important to remember to be appropriate.
To have etiquette means to behave appropriately. To have digital etiquette means to behave appropriately when using technology.

Digital Communication and Digital Etiquette go together!
How can I use technology to communicate? There are many ways to use the Internet to communicate with other people. Watch the video below to see a list of some of the different ways.
It’s hard to know when it’s appropriate to use technology to communicate. It seems like more and more often people are choosing technology over face-to-face conversations each day, but talking to someone in person is very important.
Choose face-to-face conversation if you’d be talking about:

Acceptable Use PoliciesYour school has something called an AUP or acceptable use policy. The acceptable use policy helps teachers, parents, and students all understand the rules for using technology at school. If you want to be able to use technology at school you need to be a good digital citizen. If you aren't being a good digital citizen, your teacher or principal could take technology away from you. You can find your acceptable use policy by clicking the link below.

Digital etiquette is sometimes called netiquette. Remember, etiquette means to behave appropriately. It's ALWAYS important to behave appropriately, whether you're using technology OR talking face-to-face. When you behave appropriately using technology, it means you have good digital etiquette.
If you do these things, you can have good digital etiquette

What is Cyberbullying?
You already know what bullying is. Bullying is being mean to someone else by hurting them with your hands or even hurting them with your words. Cyberbullying is the same thing except the bully uses the computer to say hurtful things about other people. A cyberbully might use email, text messages, cell phones, instant messages, social media (like Facebook and Twitter), video chatting, or blogs to bully someone else.
"Words can scar you, the worst scars are the ones you can't see…so use your words carefully."
Watch the video below. These middle school girls do a great job showing how words can hurt. Remember cyberbullies hurt other people. That is not being a good digital citizen. A cyberbully has bad digital etiquette and communication.

CONSEQUENCES
If you don't follow the rules, there could be some serious consequences!
Digital CommunicationIf you are a bad digital citizen, you might have to deal with the consequences. Make sure you are communicating appropriately. If you post a secret online, everyone could find out. Doing that might hurt your feelings or even your friends’ feelings.
Choosing to communicate online means you have to be responsible or else you could hurt people’s feelings. |
Digital EtiquetteMake sure you are using good netiquette, too! If not, the consequences could be bad!
You could hurt other people by being unkind. You could also get in trouble for taking information from the Internet that does not belong to you-that's just like stealing. Also, using bad spelling and grammar could confuse other people when you're talking to them, make sure they know how smart you really are! |
CyberbullyingBeing a cyberbully could have some serious consequences, too. You could hurt someone else, or even lose your friends-people might start to be scared of you. Your parents or your teachers and principal could get upset with you and take your technology away. Worst of all, people might also lose their trust in you. It's really hard to earn someones trust back once it's taken away.

When you're using technology ALWAYS make sure you're being
responsible, respectful, peaceful, and safe!
